June 11, 2008—Satellite images from 1972 (left) and 2007 (right) show water-level decline in Lake Chad, once the world's sixth largest.
At the junction of Nigeria, Niger, Chad, and Cameroon, the lake is now one-tenth its former size, due to declining rainfall and diversion of water for human use.
The images are part of Africa: Atlas of Our Changing Environment, a new UN book unveiled today to illustrate how climate change is affecting the continent.
"It is an indication of how serious the situation has become," said Achim Steiner, the agency's executive director, at a meeting in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Recent trends in world events make it clear we are truly on the verge of a new dawn for civilization. We now have in our hands the chance to permanently end war, environmental destruction and poverty. We will also witness the release of long suppressed technology that will enable all humans to live like billionaires if they so wish. It will be, indeed, be a Golden Age.
This is not wishful thinking. Events are unfolding as we speak that will create a change far bigger than the collapse of the Berlin wall. We have witnessed the arrival of an extraordinary global coalition uniting all countries of the planet in opposition to the secret governments of the US and Israel.
These two countries have been under the secret control of a cabal of financiers led by David Rockefeller, George Bush Senior and their assorted allies and minions. Throughout the 20th century, they started wars, slaughtered hundreds of millions of people, spread diseases, murdered heads of state who tried to oppose them and systematically brainwashed the people of Israel and the United States. Their long term plan was to enslave the majority of humanity and carry out genocide in order to create paradise for a small, self-selected elite.

CHONGQING, China - A massive earthquake struck central China on Monday, killing more than 8,500 people, trapping nearly 900 students under the rubble of their school and spilling ammonia from a chemical plant, state media reported.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake was among the worst to strike China in decades, devastating a hilly region of small cities and towns in Sichuan and nearby provinces. The official Xinhua News Agency said 8,533 people died in Sichuan and dozens of other deaths were reported elsewhere.
Xinhua said 80 percent of the buildings had collapsed in Beichuan county in Sichuan province after the quake, raising fears the overall death toll could increase sharply.
A chemical plant collapsed in Shifang city, to the northeast of the quake's epicenter, burying hundreds of people and sending more than 80 tons of toxic liquid ammonia leaking from the site, state media reported.
