THE Ministry of Defence is at last set to open its own X Files to the public.
The move promises to reveal the facts behind some of our most baffling UFO cases.
The files, to be released over the next two years, will reveal details of the thousands of reports of flying saucers over the UK since World War Two.
It means amateur alien-hunters will be able to follow in the footsteps of Fox Mulder and Dana Scully – played by David Duchovny, 46, and Gillian Anderson, 38, in cult TV show The X Files.
UFO fever was spectacularly re-ignited last
week after Captain Ray Bower, 50, a respected pilot with 22 years of
experience, saw a yellow UFO “up to a mile wide” over the Channel
Islands.
And that case has now made the MoD decide to release its files on
possible alien encounters, after staff were “bombarded” with requests
for information.
An MoD spokesman said: “We are receiving a lot of requests to see this
information, so we have decided to put the reports on our website.
“But to give this some sort of context, we have only ever been interested in reports that have a defence perspective.”
For decades, successive governments tried to keep secret the dedicated UFO unit known as S4F (Air) or DI55.
Specialists from the unit are now probing Capt Bower’s sighting to
learn whether it could be a threat to national security. It is one of
thousands of UK sightings to be investigated.
In 2004 alone, the unit received nearly 100 reports.
Britain’s most famous UFO sighting happened in Rendlesham Forest, near
RAF Woodbridge, Suffolk, in 1980. US Air Force police reported a
“glowing triangular” object.
The MoD response read: “No evidence was found of any threat to the
defence of the UK, and no further investigations were carried out.”
Even Capt Bower is keeping an open mind about what he saw off the coast of Alderney.
“I’m certainly not saying it was something of another world. All I’m
saying is that I have never seen anything like it in all my years of
flying.”
